Minnesota Valley Federal Credit Union

www.mnvalleyfcu.coop

As a credit union member, you are not just a “customer” but part-owner of a financial cooperative in which all the members pool their resources to help one another. Credit unions are dedicated to the principle of “people helping people,” and have a not-for-profit federal and state income tax status similar to other cooperatives that work primarily to better the lives of those involved and better the communities in which they live. Your credit union is directed by a volunteer board, elected by the membership, which is entrusted to keep the members’ best interests in mind, every day, all year long.

The Minnesota Valley Federal Credit Union was established in 1934 as a member-owned, not for profit financial cooperative.

The global Cooperative Community has more than 1 billion members, representing 12% of the world’s employed population. All Cooperatives verify their identity when selecting a .coop web address.

To procure the needed supplies, a group of Putney citizens led by Carol Brown formed the Putney Food Co-op according to the Cooperative Principles. The cash raised from selling member shares was used to rent a storefront (purchased in 1944), obtain goods, and hire staff members.

At the Iowa Food Cooperative, we’re local. We’re responsible.
82.5% of what you pay goes directly to our farmers. Order exactly what you want and know how your food was produced (and who produced it). Our members say our prices are fair and the food is fresher, tastier, and healthier. Choose to support producers who use practices you believe in and protect Iowa’s air, water, soil and wildlife. The Iowa Food Cooperative hosts over 150 producers who offer more than 1000+ products.

For Consumers, the Iowa Food Cooperative provides convenient, year-round access to hundreds of food and non-food products directly from Iowa farmers and artisans. Know where your food comes from and the people that produce it. MiEnergy Cooperative

www.mienergy.coop

MiEnergy Cooperative was formed in 2017 from the merger of Hawkeye REC (Iowa) and Tri-County Electric Cooperative (Minnesota), each with a rich history of pioneering electric power to the rural America heartland.

Hawkeye REC was founded in 1936 and since then the membership has covered a range of home, farm, business and commercial consumers in Chickasaw, Howard and Winneshiek counties in Iowa. Before the merger with Tri-County Electric Cooperative, HREC had about 6,700 electrical services.

Tri-County Electric Cooperative was founded in 1936 when power was not available to rural residents. Local citizens banded together to build lines going out to their homes and farms. For 80 years, TEC served three counties in Minnesota including Winona, Houston and Fillmore and parts of Olmsted and Mower counties and also served portions of Howard, Winneshiek and Allamakee counties in Iowa. Before the merger with Hawkeye REC, TEC had about 15,000 electrical services.

MiEnergy Cooperative supports the economic development efforts of area communities. Over the past few years MiEnergy has funded over $4.4 million in local projects in Iowa, through the revolving loans and grants. Many of the projects have enhanced our local communities and provided local jobs helping to stabilize our local economic growth. We work with community leaders to expand economic development and create an environment where people want to work and live. MiEnergy has invested financial commitments and other resources to improve the economy, health, safety, and quality of life in our communities, through many different projects.

Friendly City Food Co-Op

www.friendlycity.coop

The idea for a full-scale, natural and organic food co-op grocery store in downtown Harrisonburg, Virginia USA began in 2006, with a small group of community members who put a premium on using local farmers and producers. Friendly City Food Co-Op has an amazing selection of bulk spices and herbs, gourmet cheeses, delicious baked goods from local bakers, locally made soaps and lotions and our very own line of wholesome vitamins. We also have a pleasant seating area so you can enjoy a cup of coffee or soup and salad from our deli.  We’re a friendly, neighborhood grocery store with a distinctively modern twist. We are committed to growing a healthy community food system and when you shop here, you are helping to do the same.

A food Co-Op is a business based on community and sustainability. It’s about using profits to make a difference in the community and the world. Friendly City Food Co-op is a business that’s owned and democratically controlled by a large group of owners, right here in our area. We value principles of equality among owners, enrichment of the community, and support of local sustainable products. We are neither profit-driven nor non-profit. Most profit is reinvested to improve the store. Above that, profit may be returned to the owner-members and/or invested back into the community according to vote by the membership. All food cooperatives follow the 7 Cooperative Principles.
